One of the First festivals every year is Lohri. It is a North Indian festival to celebrate the coming of the harvest season and the culmination of all the hard work of the farmers and people.

With the Sun moving into Capricorn (Hindu Calendar- Makar Sankranti) it moves from Dakshinayan phase to Uttarayan, heralding the end of the winter solstice. Gradually daytime increases and nighttime decreases.

Lohri is a joyous and colourful festival traditionally celebrated by lighting a bonfire, and singing and dancing around it. Traditionally men celebrated at the communal bonfire and women in their courtyards. But, nowadays, men and women celebrate together.

Lohri is associated with the Sun (Life), Earth (Food) and Fire (Health), and the rituals are our way of saying thanks and showing gratitude to nature.

The Fire God is propitiated by first taking a parikrama (circle) around the bonfire, singing traditional Lohri songs and offering Dry fruits (especially peanuts), sesame (til) ladoos, jaggery (gur), revari, gajjak, lotus seeds (makhana) and popcorn to the Fire God by throwing them into the bonfire. While making the offerings to the Fire each one says “Aadar Aye Dilather Jaye” (may honour come and poverty be banished).

It is believed that if you rescue some of the foodstuff from the bonfire and eat it, your teeth will not decay.

The first Lohri of a bride, or a child, is celebrated in grand style, with sweets and gifts being distributed.

This year the Shubh Muhurat to start your Lohri puja (after sunset) on January 13, 2018, from 17:57 to 19:37 or from 21:16 to 22:56.

Happy Lohri!
