Dev Deepawali (also known as Dev Diwali) is the festival of Kartik Purnima, which takes place 15 days after Diwali.
Interestingly, the Festival coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti and Jain Light Festival.

It is believed that on this day, the Gods and Goddesses descend upon the earth, and diyas are lit to welcome them.
The festival is celebrated with great fanfare in Gujarat, the Northern states of India and especially in Varanasi, where many devotees travel from far away places to take ‘kartik snan’ / ‘holybath in the River Ganges on the occasion of Kartik’  and perform deep daan and attend the famous Ganga Aarti which is performed on the river banks in the evening.

This Festival is also celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Shiva over the Demon Tripurasur.

The tradition of lighting diyas for Dev Deepawali started in 1985 at the Panchganga Ghat. This year, Dev Deepawali is being celebrated on 4th November 2017.

It is considered auspicious to light Diya every evening for the 5 days from 31st October 2017 to 5th November 2017 and chant the following mantra while lighting the Diya

|| ॐ विष्णवे नमः स्वाहा ||
|| Om Vishnavey Namah Swaha ||

On Dev Deepawali, you can also decorate your house with oil lamps and make rangoli at the front doors to welcome the blessings of Gods and Goddesses into your home.

  1. I had absolutely no idea about this festival. It’s always a good idea to light up our homes to welcome the Gods and goddesses.

    1. yes, which is why i like our ritual of morning and evening diya lighting in (Hindu) homes the world over 🙂 but now i also see a shift with people from all religions embracing the cleansing aspects of lighting diya/tea lights & incense.

  2. I never knew about Dev Diwali! Encouraged by your post, I sent the message to my loved ones and also tried to follow what you advised. Thanks much. You will get one more follower now
