Diwali (Deepawali) is the Festival of Lights, and the favourite and the most celebrated festival in India.

It is a week of celebrations, with each day significant, and with its own set of rituals and prayers and customers.

Dhanteras is the first day of the Diwali celebrations. It is celebrated on triyodashi (ie. on the 13th tithi ) of Krishan Paksha in the month of Kartik. It is widely celebrated in North and West India. This year Dhanteras is on 17th of October. Read more about it here.

Traditionally, Diwali is the most auspicious day, and you pray to Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity and blessings.
On the Day before Diwali, and on Diwali lots of lights are lit to ensure that Goddess Lakshmi doesn’t miss your house, and to welcome her in.
Every year, Houses are cleaned, purified and decorated, etc as the Home is readied to welcome her – Goddess Lakshmi, the most auspicious guest of the year.
Diwali is the start of the Financial year, and therefore many rituals and Puja(s) are performed for prosperity, health, good luck and money and Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings.
Here are some rituals you can do this Diwali – From our Astrology Desk –

Before Diwali Puja – take a nariyal (coconut_ and kheer. Take it all around your house.
ensure that you do not re-cross your path, or go through a room twice. Moving from upstairs to downstairs, from the back to the front of the house, ending at the entrance of your house.
Break the coconut at your entrance, leave the kheer there, and then proceed to do your Puja.

At midnight on Diwali, light 11 ghee diyas in a circle in the centre of your home – and with roli write shri in hindi and light the diyas and recite Shri 108 times and invite Goddess Lakshmi into your house.

For an always FULL tijori/ safe –
During Diwali Puja, take a box (silver or wooden) and put a large layer of sindoor from the Puja in it. Then place 3 gomti chakra over this, and then fill the box to the top with sindoor (from the puja). Recite the mantra “OM SHRI SHRIYE NAMAH” 1008 times.
Next morning, have a bath, Wrap this box in red or yellow fabric which chanting the mantra 11 times, and then place it in your safe.

If someone is repeatedly falling ill, or if someone has fallen under the evil eye (buri nazar) –
Before Diwali Puja, make a atta ka diya (Diya made from wheat flour dough) with 4 corners (known as a chaumukhi) and fill it with kaphur (camphor).
Next take 125 gms of fitkiri (alum) anti-clock-wise around the diya. Go to a crossroad and light the camphor diya and throw the alum in the southern direction and come back. Do not look back at the Diya,
On entering the house, immediately wash your hands and feet.
Next morning, donate Rs. 11/- to a sweeper (preferably along with the affected person’s some old clothes).

I’d always like more prosperity, but I think God has richly blessed us with all that we need.
I don’t think that coconut trick would work well with us. My wife likes coconut obsessively. She would probably not carry one around the house and she’d be pretty quick to devour it.
